Generations Coming Together

Dean Park Nursery children enjoy a visit to Windsor Court Care Home

A small group of children and staff from Dean Park Nursery had the great privilege
of spending time with the residents a short walk away at nearby Windsor Court Care Home
for the Elderly.

The nursery is proud to play a part in its local community but what made this visit extra
special was that Windsor Court were celebrating the 101st birthday of one of their residents
that day.

The children – aged 3 and 4 years old – politely introduced themselves and engaged in a
variety of arts and crafts activities, sharing their creations with their delighted ‘audience.’
The visit was a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their social and emotional
skills and staff at the care home commented on the children’s gentleness around elderly
people, and the residents were impressed by their excellent manners.

It was heart-warming to see the interaction between the generations as the children listened
to stories, enjoyed sticker book activities, and played with toy farmyard animals – which
sparked conversations with the elderly residents about their own childhoods.  The children were enthralled by the residents talking about what life was like when they were their age, and the icing on the cake came when one of the residents recalled playing cricket at the ground where Dean Park Nursery is now based.
Both the elderly residents and the children got so much out of their time together that Dean
Park Nursery plans to make visiting the Windsor Court Care Home a regular fixture.
