New Smartboards At Dean Park Day Nursery
Two new interactive whiteboards, known as 'smartboards' have recently been installed at Dean Park Day Nursery. Our latest blog takes a look at the use of technology within the Early Years curriculum.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum focuses on the holistic development of children up to the age of 5. With the integration of technology, particularly the use of smartboards, the EYFS curriculum is evolving to meet the needs of today's digital natives. Dean Park Day Nursery in Bournemouth has recently invested in two smartboards, which are interactive whiteboards, to provide a dynamic platform that will enhance the learning experience for our children in multiple ways.
One of the primary benefits of smartboards in the EYFS curriculum is their ability to make learning more interactive and engaging. Children at this age learn best through play and hands-on activities. Smartboards allow for this by offering touch-based interactions, which are intuitive for young children. They can manipulate images, trace letters, and participate in interactive games that reinforce early literacy and numeracy skills. This hands-on learning approach helps children develop fine motor skills and improves hand-eye coordination.
Moreover, smartboards support diverse learning styles. Visual learners benefit from vibrant images and videos, auditory learners engage with sounds and music, while kinaesthetic learners enjoy the physical interaction with the board. This multimodal learning environment ensures that every child, regardless of their preferred learning style, can benefit from the technology.
Another advantage of smartboards is the ability to access a vast range of educational resources. Dean Park’s knowledgeable Early Years practitioners can easily incorporate multimedia elements such as videos, animations, and interactive stories, which make abstract concepts more concrete and understandable for young children. This access to diverse resources can also give the children access to a variety of topics in an exciting and engaging manner.
As technology continues to advance, it’s clear that smartboards will play an increasingly important role in early childhood education. Dean Park Day Nursery works closely with Park School, an independent school in the Queens Park area of Bournemouth, where they have a smartboard in each Reception classroom. This means that when the time comes for children to transition to the primary stage of their education, the boards will be familiar to them. It's clear that the use of smartboards in the EYFS curriculum at Dean Park Day Nursery offers significant benefits, from enhancing engagement and interactivity to supporting diverse learning styles and providing access to a wealth of resources.
