Nursery Children Enjoy Fire Brigade Fun
Staff at Dean Park Day Nursery were delighted to welcome a visit from our local Westbourne Fire Station recently. The firefighters brought their magnificent fire engine – or “appliance” as we learnt it should be called – for the whole nursery to experience it first-hand.
The visit was an extension of the work we have been doing at the nursery around the theme of transport. Transport is a great topic for inviting children to share their own experiences, and those of their parents and carers, as everyone needs to get from A to B. We have been talking with the children about different types of vehicles, and children of all ages were very excited to explore a vehicle as special as a real fire engine.
The visit was an excellent learning opportunity for the children and opened up valuable conversations about ‘safe’ people and people who help us, as well as developing enriched language such as calling the fire engine an “appliance” and the brave people who manned it “firefighters.”
The children also got the chance to explore the “appliance” and lots of them were confident enough to climb up into the high cab and even hold the powerful hose for putting out fires. Our young learners used their social skills to ask the firefighters about saving cats from trees, and rounded off the afternoon with creative play, making their very own cat parachutes.
